MICROMAX A110 CANVAS 2 FEATURES

micromax a110 canvas2
micromax a110 canvas2

With big screen phones, popularly known as phablets, gaining prominence, and the increasing demand for budget alternatives, Micromax decided to upgrade its Canvas line-up, within two months of launching its first 5-inch phone, the A100. The successor to the A100, the A110 or Canvas 2 features a Dual Core processor, an IPS panel, and an upgraded 8-megapixel camera. Here's our review of the device.

Hardware
The front of the phone looks strikingly similar to the Samsung Galaxy S III and the Note II, except for the absence of a physical home button. The chrome speaker grill, front camera and sensors are positioned similar to that of the Note 2. There are markings for three capacitive touch buttons below the display. There's no Micromax branding on the front of the phone. There's a chrome trim around the phone that was a little too shiny for our liking. On the right side, there's a big power key, while the volume rocker sits on the left hand side. Both these keys also sport a chrome finish, but kind of lack refinement, in our opinion. The Micro-USB port and the 3.5mm audio ports sit on the top of the phone. The back cover is made of plastic and has a matte finish. The material used feels durable, and offers a good grip. The camera lens, however, protrudes out towards the top, and feels awkward. There's a dual LED flash besides the camera. The back also sports Micromax branding and a speaker.
In terms of hardware, the device is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor with 512MB RAM, and has 4GB internal storage expandable up to 32GB with microSD card.
The Micromax A110 is a dual-SIM smartphone and supports GSM SIM card in both the slots. The SIM Card slots and a slot for the micro SD card hide behind the back cover just above the battery slot. Unfortunately, the SIM cards and the Micro SD cards are not hot-swappable and you'll have to take the battery out if you want to replace either of them.
Display
The Micromax A110 comes with a 5-inch 262k colour capacitive touch screen with an IPS panel sporting a resolution of 480x854 pixels. We found the screen resolution to be pretty low for a device of this size, and the graphics and text appeared to be less sharp. The viewing angles looked good, and the under-sun visibility on the phone was decent, though we found the screen to be highly reflective.
micromax a110 canvas2
micromax a110 canvas2

Camera
The 8-megapixel autofocus shooter takes decent images in daylight, although we feel that colour reproduction could have been better. Also, we observed that pictures taken in low-light conditions and indoors (without the use of the LED flash) were a bit grainy. The dual-led flash fulfills its intended purpose. The quality of videos captured through the back camera was average. Overall, we feel that the phone's good for casual photography.
A daylight shot taken with the Micromax A110 Canvas 2
There is also a 0.3-megapixel front camera, which takes average pictures, and can be used for video conferencing. We wish the phone had a dedicated camera button to help click a quick picture.
Software/ Interface
The Micromax Canvas 2 runs Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Micromax has skinned some elements of the user interface, such as the app icons and the notification tray. The notification tray includes toggles for settings such as Wi-Fi, Brightness, Rotation, Bluetooth, GPS, Data and profiles (for alerts and other notifications). Similar to other ICS devices, there are five customisable home screens that can be filled with app shortcuts and widgets.
Micromax has also included some of its own apps including its own apps and content store, M! Store, and services store, M! Zone, in addition to its messaging app, HookUp, and friends locator app, M! Buddy and a few games (Fruit Devil, Cricket Fever). The handset also offers FM Radio.
The handset sports three capacitive buttons - a Menu key, Home button and a Back key. Long pressing the Home key opens the app-switcher for switching between open/previously accessed apps. To be honest, we find the menu button redundant. Perhaps, Micromax could allow users to use the menu button exclusively as the app-switcher, on the lines of newer HTC phones. Also, the phone could do with stock icons, and we're not sure why Micromax decided to skin them. We also noticed that Micromax's app store was offering apps such as Viber and Nimbuzz, which are otherwise free, as paid apps.We checked with Micromax and they informed that their app store offers ad-free versions of the apps.
During our use of the phone we noticed some minor lag, especially while playing games, but other than that, we'd rate our overall experience as above average. We expected a bit more from a phone that runs on a dual-core processor. We're not sure if the phone would get updated to Jelly Bean, which offers a smoother user experience compared to ICS.
Performance/ Battery Life
The phone is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor that is a MediaTek chip, and has 512MB of RAM on board. We did not encounter any crashes while working on the phone and multitasking was comfortable. We did notice some lag while navigating through the menu, and while playing some games. We were not able to play 1020p HD video clips, and 720p clips also stuttered. The phone also doesn't support .avi videos natively, but that can be easily fixed by downloading third-party video players.
The phone comes with the native Android browser and renders all webpages well. The phone doesn't come with Adobe Flash. The speaker on the phone delivers good quality sound but volume levels are low. Also, since the speaker is located at the back, the volume levels further decrease when the phone lies on its back. The phone surprisingly doesn't include an ambient light-sensor, so there's no setting for automatic brightness, and the user would need to manually set brightness levels for the screen.
Call quality was good. The phone is a dual-SIM GSM phone with support for one active and the other in active-standby mode.
The Micromax Canvas 2 comes with a 2000mAh battery and we were satisfied with the backup that it offered. We were able to get around 7 hours of video playback, even with the display on full brightness levels. With intermediate usage during the day, including playing games, a few calls, and e-mail and Twitter notifications turned on, we were able to get about one-and-a-half days of backup. The phone would easily give 7-9 hours of usage on a single charge.
Verdict
The Micromax A110- Canvas 2 is a decent upgrade to the A100. A 5-inch screen phone at a price point of Rs 9,990 is indeed a value for money proposition. We wish Micromax could have offered a better screen, and shipped this phone with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Micromax has already announced the successor to the Canvas 2, the A116 or Canvas HD, which is expected to be available in February. The Canvas HD features a Quad-core processor (again a MediaTek chip), a 5-inch 720p display and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It's expected to be priced below Rs. 15,000. So if you can spend a little more, we'd recommend waiting for the Canvas HD. There's also the Karbonn S1 Titanium, which also has a quad-core processor, and sports a 4.5-inch qHD (960x540) multi-touch capacitive touch display and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The phone's been priced at Rs 10,990

NOKIA LUMIA 620 FEATURES AND REVIEWS

nokia lumia 620 features

NOKIA LUMIA 620 REVIEWS AND PRICE IN INDIA AND USA
Nokia should be credited for formulating stunning budget Windows devices in the past. It's most recent iteration, the Lumia 620 stands proud with its curved, contoured cup styling, masking under it a brand new Windows Phone 8 OS and a 1GHz dual-core processor.

While the handset is no powerhouse when compared to its heavyweight siblings, Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, it has enough juice for running daily errands and delivering a sweat-free mobile experience.

The Lumia 620 frames a handsome detailing. It brings onboard a second layer of colored, transparent polycarbonate on top of a base layer to produce secondary color blends and depth effects. Available in a rainbow of colors, (white, black, yellow, cyan, and magenta), the exchangeable shells can be customized to suit your taste.
nokia lumia 620

However on that note we must add that removing the cover is anything but easy. You won't break into a sweat, but it can be a hassle with no obvious starting points to pull out the cover.  The trick lies in nailing it, quite literally. You need to dig your nails under the cover at the top and then push the camera lens, to pop the cover.
nokia lumia 620

The NFC-enabled device sports a 3.8-inch WVGA display with Nokia's Clear Black technology. In addition the device also shares some interesting features with its older siblings the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 in terms of exclusive camera lenses that transform the creative power of its 5-megapixel main camera.

It also harbors 720p video capabilities and LED flash-cum-video light. For the fans who love skype-ing and chatting, there is also a front facing camera to meet all your secondary needs.

Apart from the camera, the sound experience also deserves a special mention. In true Nokia style, the Finnish giant has bundled up Nokia Music app which offers free streaming of ad-free radio-style tracks and the ability to download playlists for listening offline.

In addition the presence of Dolby sound and graphic equaliser promise to further enhance the sound quality. The device squeezes in two mic's which mitigates any crackling or hissing sounds while recording -giving you another reason to grab the device.

Apart from this Nokia as usual packs along several exclusive apps like Nokia Maps, Nokia City Lens, Nokia Drive and Nokia Transport.

On the storage front, the Lumia 620 houses 512MB of RAM, 8GB onboard and 7GB free Skydrive storage. The battery on the other hand rests at 1,300mAh, giving you a descent output of 9.9 hours of talktime and 330 hours of standby time, according to Nokia ( we will have to put this to test though).

It's really hard to imagine that the Lumia 620 is a entry-level Windows 8 phone device. In fact with all the features it's not far off from its other high-end siblings, which sell for over Rs 25,000.

The third and most affordable Windows Phone 8 smartphone, Lumia 620 will arrive in India in the second week of February at a sub Rs 18,000 price point. Stay tuned to KYMI for a detailed review of the device.

Micromax A116 Canvas HD Specification and reviews

Micromax is showing no sign of slowing down when it comes to the phablet onslaught, brought about by the Canvas 2 A110. The company has launched a high-end version dubbed the A116 Canvas HD, which raises the bar once again for mid-range Android, or simply smartphones in general. The A116 boasts of a higher definition screen and a more powerful quad-core CPU, something we’ve not seen in this price range till now. Its primary competition when it launches in the first week of February will be the WickedLeak Wammy Sensation around the same price point and the just launched Samsung Galaxy Grand. Let’s breakdown the specification of the Canvas HD A116 and see how it stacks up against the competition.

OS – Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
The A116 will launch with 4.1 Jelly Bean right out of the box. This puts it ahead of the curb compared to other phones in this price range as well as well as some higher-end handsets. Jelly Bean brings with it Project Butter, which helps deliver a smooth UI experience as well as other enhancements like Google Now, a better camera interface etc.
IPS display with HD resolution
IPS display with HD resolution

Cellular network – Dual SIM GSM and 3G
The Canvas HD A116 will retain the dual SIM functionality and will support GSM and 3G networks. You should be able to use both SIMs simultaneously as well, although what’s not very clear at this point is whether or not it will support quad-band or even dual-band 3G.

Display – 5-inch HD IPS
Our major gripe with the Canvas 2 A110 has been addressed with the A116. Micromax has fitted the Canvas HD with a 720p IPS display, which brings the pixel count all the way up to 294ppi. This is the same pixel count as the first Galaxy Note. The Wammy Sensation has a slight edge over the A116 as it packs in the same resolution but on a smaller 4.7-inch display. The Galaxy Grand won’t be a very pretty sight since it only has a WVGA resolution at the same screen size. We’re not sure yet if the Canvas HD will have any scratch resistant glass fitted to it.

Form factor and weight – Will be a handful
With nothing but a picture to go, we don’t have the official dimensions and weight of the A116, but we can safely assume it won’t be too far off from the dimensions of the A110. It does appear to be slightly thicker than the A110, but it’s quite hard to tell based on one picture alone.

Wi-Fi – 802.11 ‘n’
It’s business as usual over here. We have Wi-Fi 802.11 ‘n’ for connectivity. It’s not dual-band, but still good enough for everyday use.

SoC– MediaTek MT6589 (quad-core)
This is one area where Micromax has completely blown away the competition. The A116 features MediaTek’s MT6589 SoC, which contains a quadc-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU and PowerVR Series5XT GPU. While the CPU uses the slightly older architecture from ARM, the SoC is built using the newer 28nm fabrication process, so it should do well in terms of power efficiency. Micromax hasn’t detailed all the multimedia capabilities of the A116, but digging a little deeper in to the chipsets capabilities, we find support for 1080p video recording. Whether or not Micromax chooses to use this is yet to be seen. Nevertheless, the four cores should easily help in gaming and even the general responsiveness of the UI. Another noteworthy feature is the inclusion of 1GB of RAM, which is on par with the Wammy Sensation and the Galaxy Grand.

Storage – 4GB onboard with room for expansion
Onboard storage is not much; thankfully, you have the option to expand it via a microSD card slot.
Jelly Bean onboard!
Jelly Bean onboard!

Primary Camera – 8MP sensor with LED flash
The primary camera is an 8MP similar to the one used on the A110. Sadly, it’s not a BSI sensor like the one on the XOLO A800. We feel Micromax could have done a little better in this area. Still, we’ll have to wait and see how much of an improvement the camera on the A116 really is.

Front camera – VGA resolution
The front facing camera is only VGA, so don’t expect a whole lot for video calls or even self-portraits.

Sensors – Accelerometer, proximity
We don’t have any details on the sensors in the A116, but it’s safe to assume that it will have a accelerometer and a proximity sensor. We hope that the Canvas also features an ambient light sensor and if we’re lucky, a gyro and a compass as well.

GPS – GLONASS and GPS
Micromax has stuck with the good’ol GPS for the A116 as GLONASS is missing from the picture. We guess including that piece of hardware would have driven the cost up.

Battery – Li-Ion 2100mAh
The battery size is the same as the one on the Galaxy Grand, however, the quad-core CPU in the A116 might take a toll at the end of the day. A larger battery would have been nice, but we’re guessing that would have automatically increased the weight or the dimensions of the phone.

The bottom line
No matter how much we try and nit-pick, there’s no denying the fact that the Canvas HD is currently the best Android smartphone, at least on paper. We don’t know if there will be any competition to the A116 by the time it actually hits retail, but it’s safe to assume that it’s going to be really tough to beat. Some of the strong points that work in its favour include an HD IPS display, quad-core CPU and Jelly Bean support. The only real area of concern right now is the battery life.
While it's great to see such a powerful handset at a reasonable price, the real question is, will people be ready to shell out more than Rs.10,000 for a Micromax? The company has undoubtedly produced some very good handsets in the past few months, but they’ve all been around the Rs.10,000. When you come to the 15K to 20K price range, things like aesthetics, quality of materials used, updates etc. tend to matter. Samsung has just launched the Galaxy Grand for an MRP of 21,500, so assuming the street price is around Rs.18,000, unless you’re on a very tight budget, a typical user would cough up the extra dough for a product from a more established company. If you had to pick between the A116 and the Galaxy Grand, which one would you go for?

SPICE MI 1010 STELLER PAD FEATURES

Spice Mi-1010 Stellar Pad

There is a plethora of Android-based budget phones and tablets being released in the market and most are affordably priced keeping the mass user demand in mind. 7- inch tablets were the first to be seen around as the hottest selling ones and with the further price cuts on the hardware, we are now seeing large screen and dual-core tablets too. We have recently reviewed a few large-screen budget Android tablets and did find a few worthy ones. This time we have the Spice Stellar Pad MI-1010 in our labs. By the looks and the hardware specs, it does look promising. Let’s check out if it really lives up to our expectations.

10-inch IPS panel with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution

Design and build
Holding it upfront, one could mistake it for an iPad from afar, but what gives it away is the 16:9 wide screen and the missing Home button. The MI-1010 has a beautiful looking design with rounded edges and a matte-finished silver metal back panel. The front panel is completely covered edge-to-edge by the display’s protective glass with no buttons whatsoever. The rear panel sports the 3 megapixel camera and two stereo speakers. About an inch from the bottom of the rear panel is a split, made of plastic to make way for the wireless network’s operation. The right side houses the power jack, a microUSB PC interface, a miniHDMI port, a microSD card slot and the audio jack. Two miniature holes are also visible, one each for the reset switch and the microphone. The top features the volume rocker and the power button. The tablet measures 259 mm and 174 mm in width and height respectively and is 10 mm thick.  The tablet is pretty heavy at 667 grams.

Metal rear panel with matte finish
Spice Mi-1010 Stellar Pad

Features
The Spice Stellar Pad MI-1010 is powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and a MALI-400 GPU. It has 1GB of RAM and sports an internal storage of 16GB, expandable up to 32 GB via microSD card. The display featured here is an HD 10-inch LCD IPS panel that has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9. The display also allows 10-point multi-touch for use in games and apps that require multi-finger inputs or gestures. The operating system installed on the Spice Stellar MI-1010 is Android Jelly Bean version 4.1.

microUSB, microSD card slot, miniHDMI on the right

The MI-1010 has two cameras—the main rear shooter with a 3 mega-pixel resolution and the front facing camera, which is a standard 0.3 MP. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n wireless networking and a microUSB PC interface with OTG support for 3G dongles, input devices and external storage drives. The power source for the tablet is a sufficient 7600mAh Li-ion Polymer battery. Additional features include GPS and a G sensor. What we found missing is the Bluetooth option.

Volume rocker and power button on the top

User interface
The MI-1010 has a stock tablet user interface. The tablet is actually powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, but the manufacturer has overclocked the processor marginally and left it at a maximum 1.6GHz. We did find the user interface still a tad jittery, but it goes unnoticed while swiping around the interface with speed. Overclocking the processor has also left the tablet overheating slightly, but after a fairly prolonged use, the tablet did not become unstable or freeze. This means that the processor has been safely overclocked. Overall, the user interface is smooth enough and we don’t have any complaints here. Lastly, the manufacturer has included a few free apps for productivity and entertainment. We did notice a very annoying fact – when the tablet is powered on or shut down, the start-up and shut-down music by the manufacturer in the ROM is extremely loud and shrill and there is no way you can reduce the volume. So if you want to start up or shut down the tablet in a silent zone, or when all are asleep at night, you might have to plug in the earphones to shunt the audio to the earphones. Removing the audio would require rooting the tablet and disabling or deleting the audio tracks from the operating system folder.

TOP FIVE SOLD PHONES IN USA FROM SAMSUNG AND APPLE

 chartgo-1

So, Apple has top market share in the U.S., and Samsung is close on its heels. That much we know. But the sheer scale of the dominance is simply shocking. In the fourth quarter of 2012, manufacturers shipped 52 million phones in the United States, according to Strategy Analytics. Apple shipped 17.7 million of them, and Samsung shipped 16.8 million. The next largest competitor, LG, shipped only 4.7 million. Everything else is buried in the dreaded “Other”
category:
What those numbers mean is that Apple and Samsung have cornered 65 percent of the market (or 69 percent, according to the NPD Group’s numbers). But it’s even more shocking when you look at phone models. The top five models all come from the only two smartphone vendors that have won significant market share in the U.S. Apple and Samsung continued to run away from all the other smartphone makers accounting for nearly 70 percent of all sales during Q4 2012, analyst firm NPD Group said in a statement.
The iPhone 5 was the top-selling smartphone in the last quarter of 2012, according to that NPD Group report, and Apple has three more spots in the top five, with its old model iPhone 4S and even older model iPhone 4 still selling well.
Top 5 selling smartphones in the U.S.
Source: NPD Group
Top 5 selling smartphones in the U.S.Still think Apple shouldn’t build a cheaper iPhone, by the way? Samsung is doing very well also, of course, with two phones in the top five: its flagship Galaxy S III and the slightly less-well-endowed Galaxy S II. And of course, Samsung has a raft of other products in its Galaxy and other model lines targeted various consumer niches. Besides that fact that the smartphone race in the U.S. is a two-horse race, another thing is completely clear: Smartphones have clearly beaten feature phones. And that’s going to force another set of changes in the market. While smartphone sales continued on their torrid pace in the fourth quarter, the seeds of change are evident in the sales numbers, the NPD Group’s VP of industry analysis Stephen Baker said in a statement. With of the vast majority of all phone sales now smartphones, and with the largest unit-sales growth within smartphones occurring in the prepaid segment, today’s product pricing and channel models will need to adapt to accommodate this new reality.
